Welcome to the April 2006 edition of the Newsletter

Well the diving session is just about to kick off as, hopefully, the weather starts to warm up in the next few weeks. So here are just a few of things happening in the club you might want to get involved in over the next couple of months.

April 8th/9th - Trip to Wales

We are travelling up to Wales on the evening of the 7th and staying in a bunk house. Hopefully we will be able to get into Dorothea lake near Nantlle in North Wales. For those that don't know Dorothea is a very large lake, several times the size of Stoney Cove and also the deepest lake in Europe at around 110 metres. Obviously we'll be staying well away from that area but there are some interesting areas shallower than 40 metres. Officially it's not intended as a diving lake so it can be difficult to get into it sometimes, however at the time of writing it's open.

If we are unable to get into Dorothea then we have the option of Vivian or possibly the sea if it's not too rough. The cost is just to cover the 2 nights B+B which is £45 and people can arrange car shares to get themselves there. Just let the shop know if you are interested in coming.

April 29th/30th - Advanced Open Water/Specialities

The next Advanced Course is this weekend in conjunction with the Open Water Course. So if you have recently passed the Open Water Course and are planning to progress to the next level now is your chance. We can also do any Specialities this weekend so if you want to do deep, wreck, drysuit or any other specialities then speak to the shop to book a space.

May 11th-14th - Oban

This trip is well known for some excellent diving. This year it's full board on a liveaboard and we will be diving 12th, 13th and 14th on the wrecks in this area. For those that want to you can pay to stay for an extra night and come back on the Monday (15th) to make it a slightly easier trip home. Cost is £199 and places are limited so book early if you are interested. You can pay a deposit on the web to hold a place.

May 20th - Equipment Speciality Course

This course is an official PADI Speciality and can cound towards your Master Scuba Diver rating if that's the qualification you are aiming for. The course covers all areas of equipment maintenance so that you are more able to fix something like a swivel pin failure in the field if you get one. It might mean the difference between getting a dive or having to sit on the boat because of a simple O ring replacement. You will even see a full reg strip down so you can see how these actually function. Although repair and adjustments of regulators should be left to qualified technicians it's useful to know how they work so you gain a better understanding of what is required to keep them functioning effectively. This one day course is only taught once a year at the most, sometimes only every other year, so if you are interested, now is the time to book. Cost is £75.

Pool Sessions - monthly

Not been diving for a couple of months over the winter ? Why not take advantage of one of the benefits of being a club member and try all your unused kit in the pool prior to taking it to the Open Water. If you don't have all of your own kit the Dive Centre can supply what you need in the pool for free. Just check beforehand to make sure there is space and enough kit available. If you've been out of the water for several months and are a bit rusty why not consider a Scuba Review which will cover all of the skills you did on your Open Water Course - when was the last time you actually practiced sharing air or breathing from a free flowing reg. It only takes around an hour. Call the shop to book.

FEATURE ARTICLES BY CLUB MEMBERS

Sorry but as nobody has been on any trips since Christmas there are no articles for this newsletter. Hopefully someone out there can write something about some of the trips later in the year. There will be articles on the Wales and Oban trips in the next newsletter.

Don’t Forget - Thursday Diving Days

As the new dive season approaches don't forget we are still running the club diving days at Stoney Cove on the last Thursday of the month. If you have qualified over the winter and want to get a few dives in with an Instructor or Assistant Instructor, before the season starts, now’s your chance. The next date is 27th of April.

And finally ....

A hundred and twenty five hours underwater

Yes you read it right - 125 hours underwater - that's more than 5 days AND nights !

As you may know Cliff and Richard know the Editor of Sport Diver Magazine, Mark Evans, quite well and so when the magazine decided to try and break the world record for the time spend underwater on open circuit scuba he asked Cliff and Richard if they knew anbody that wanted to try it. A total of five divers would be required. Two members of the CDWC staff were given the chance to participate as well as three members of the Sport Diver Staff. Divers would be wearing full face masks to allow them to sleep underwater at night and special temperature controlled drysuits to control body temperature, even though the record was attempted in a 3 metre deep swimming pool. During the day the five divers were able to play board games and even watch a specially made underwater television to try and pass the time. A total of 175 cylinder changes were required, all completed underwater with the help of a 12 diver support team. During the 5 days the team were also able to smash the previous world records for time spent playing underwater scrabble, underwater monopoly and underwater ironing. At the end of the record attempt divers where required to complete 4 hours of decompression stops at 2 metres, 1 metre and half and metre on 100% oxygen to remove the nitrogen that had accumulated in their bodies over the five day event.

The main problems were eating and drinking and obviously using the toilet. Special liquid diets were planned by the doctors monitoring the divers which could be drunk underwater and they contained a mild antimotility drug - loperamide hydrochloride - which would slow the bowel down during the attempt. This was combined with a hops and barley extract which allowed the CDWC staff divers to maintain their normal blood alchohol levels for the full 5 days. Full details of the record attempt will be in the April addition of sport diver which goes on sale from the 1st of the month. Richard took his camera so we will have a few pictures of those involved at the next club meeting, just ask him if you want to see them.
